Polystyrene protects plants from winter cold

If you want to protect plants from winter cold and drying out, use polystyrene shield for the potted plants. Rapidly fluctuating temperatures from cold to hot and back can cause significant injury to roots. Place a piece of polystyrene under the pot. It helps against  the cold window sill or overheated surfaces caused by the excessive heating during winter months.

How to use stale bread

Stale bread in the pantry is not a bad thing!

My favorite way to use stale white or whole wheat breads is to transform them into breadcrumbs.

breadcrumbs grated Fresh homemade breadcrumbs taste far better than store-bought breadcrumbs.

You can use breadcrumbs for cooking hamburgers and chopped steak, breaded fish, cordon bleu or various sauces.

Crumble stale bread in the food processor or grate it.

Store breadcrumbs in cool, dry area in the iron can; keep tightly covered after opening. Breadcrumbs can be stored for a long time if they have been stored properly.

What helps avoid tears when cutting onions

When we cut onions, we break cells, releasing enzymes that irritate our eyes. Water helps avoid tears when cutting onions. Put some water in your mouth and let it hang out while chopping. Do not swallow the water, until you finish cutting. Also you can cut onions in the sink under running water.

Use a very sharp knife while cutting onions. A sharp knife will cause less damage to an onion, and fewer irritants will be released.

A tip from the Chef: A sip of white wine will prevent tears when chopping onions.

How to prevent mold in the vegetable storage container

Fruits and vegetables will be protected from mold while storing, if you put a sponge for washing dishes into the vegetable storage container. To get rid of mold in a storage container, clean it with vinegar water solution to kill mold spores. Wipe the container with vinegar and remove the residue with a dry cloth. Then leave to dry. If possible, dry it in direct sunlight. Vinegar and direct sunlight destroy spores of mold.

To prevent mold, wipe vegetable storage container this way every two weeks.

How to root cuttings with natural stimulants

Use natural stimulants to promote root growth in plants.

Here are some ideas how to root cuttings.
1. Potatoes. A potatoe contains many nutrients. For rooting take a large potato. Make a cut and insert the cutting into it. Spray the plant every day.
2. Willow water. Cut some willow twigs and put them in a container with water. Wait until roots appear, then remove the twigs and put the new cutting in this water.
3. Aloe. Add 3-7 drops of fresh aloe juice in water (100 ml). Aloe juice accelerates the growth of roots of transplants, because it contains substances that enhances the cell growth.
4. Banana water. Cut banana peels into pieces, fill them with water and let them brew. Use this water for rooting the day after.
5. Yeast. Mix 100 mg of yeast with 1 liter of water and soak your cuttings for 24 hours. Then plant as you normally would.

How to get rid of wrinkles from clothes without an iron

When you are traveling, you may not usually have an opportunity to get an iron. This advice helps to get rid of wrinkles from clothes without using an iron.

  • To remove wrinkles from clothes you need to mix three ingredients in equal proportions: vinegar, water and fabric softener. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and mix thoroughly. Spray the mixture over the entire surface of the clothes. Wait for some time till the fabric dries out and releases the wrinkles.
  • While washing in the washing machine, always choose the mode “easy iron” for delicate fabrics. The mode “easy iron” reduces crease formation.
  • Always shake out clothing before hanging or straighten them with hands to reduce wrinkles.
